Heaven Claims Another Angel
Whitney Houston 1963-2012
“The Shaun has no words that would do any justice to respond to the passing of Whitney Houston. A tragic loss in so many ways.”
After taking a few moments to let the loss of Whitney Houston set in, The Shaun will share a few words on Whitney that might be lost otherwise. It is imperative that we do not spend as much time focusing one’s death as we do celebrating their life and the gifts they gave to the world during it. Surely, as unfortunate it is, there will be some that will focus their thoughts and words on the years, months and days leading up to her death. Yet we cannot let that take away from the overwhelming amount of inspiration and musical influence she brought to the world. Without Whitney, there might not be a Alicia Keys, a Mariah Carey or Jennifer Hudson; all of whom have cited Whitney Houston as one that inspired their music.
Whitney Houston was a pioneer who opened the doors for not only many of the great R&B ladies of the 90s, including Anita Baker and Mary J. Blige, but recent African-American acting great females like Halle Berry and Angela Bassett. Many tend to forget that prior to Whitney’s role in the Bodyguard, women of color still struggled mightily to gain leading roles in major movies. Film’s producers almost went with Madonna in the lead role in fear that the movie would be successful with a women of color as the lead. The bodyguard was also one of the first major movies to feature an interracial romance.
So as you review the undoubtedly many news reports and discuss with those around you regarding Whitney’s death over the next few days, hopefully The Shaun has given you something to different to think about. Something that will take you back to a time when it was about the beautiful music Whitney made with a voice with a sound that made you think God placed an angel there to sing to us. Maybe you will remember how songs like “I Will Always Love You“, “Run To You” and “I Am Nothing” that would bring a tear to your eye with the shear beauty of their sound. Oh and then there was this...
Whitney…WE WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOU!

Who Says Tiger Woods Cannot Comeback?!
People want to believe Tiger can’t comeback because they feel they CAN’T do it. #miserylovescompany
The Shaun finds some recent comments on Tiger’s “comeback” interesting to say the least. There are many that continue to state that there is no chance Tiger Woods can regain his previous form and among golf’s elite. Now this makes The Shaun curious as to from what motivation these comments are being made as evidence does not show they are being made based on factual evidence. Who are we to say someone CAN’T do anything, including overcoming a great fall from grace as Tiger is attempting? Personal feelings about the man aside, Tiger has shown a mental toughness throughout his career that actually might give some the impression if anyone is possible of such a comeback it’s him.
Take a look at similar sports greats who have comeback from personal falls; again putting personal feelings of these men aside. Kobe Bryant won 3 championships AFTER being accused of rape and opening admitting he cheated on his wife which resulted in the lost of much of his endorsements and public support. Michael Jordan also won 3 championship and, some minds came back better than ever, after his father was killed. Ray Lewis is now all potential Hall of Fame linebacker in the waiting after being on trial for murder. Michael Vick and Plaxico Burress continue to attempt the same after being released from prison.
While these examples may not serve as a direct comparison to Tiger’s situation, they do give evidence to the fact that there is a level of mental toughness and determination that sets them apart. This level of determination and drive for competitive greatness can only be achieved by those who truly commit themselves to it which is something frankly many are not willing to do within their own lives. This may be why some would choose to say that another person CAN’T do it because they are not willing to put the effort to do so. Does our own lack of confidence in ourselves affect what we perceive are the capabilities of others? Is it that once we down someone down to our level we want them to stay there because we are comfortable at being at that level? The phrase “misery loves company” comes to mind in these cases increasingly as it seems more and more we appear to take joy in publicly knocking others down to feel better about ourselves.
The word CAN’T is a very dangerous yet overused word these days. Regardless what you feel about the person personally, it is NEVER our place to say what someone is not capable of just because you do not believe you are capable of the same.
